I grew up in a large family during the 60s/70s, so in my world, Cheez Whiz and Velveeta were the definition of the gooey goodness (by kids’ standards) I was told was cheese.
Then one day Dad took us into Amish country and we got to taste what real cheese was all about. I remember it clearly – the fascinating guy in black and blue behind the glass case who seemed to be full of cheese wisdom, the slices of cheese we would be handed and expected to savor, the careful choosing of a block to take home, and the simple joy my dad showed every time he brought out the new slicer and shaved off a piece for each of us.
So is it any wonder I feel the same about real cheese? When I want to treat myself to something special, I go cheese shopping.
Landana’s 1,000 Day Gouda is my new delectable discovery. This is a Dutch cheese with a special processing that produces the deep golden color and a slightly sharp flavor, so a little goes a long way.
I am hooked. Whether you eat the cheese by itself, on a cracker, shredded over a salad or on a sandwich, it enhances the experience.
